Here
at ID Models we can never have enough paints, if we go too long without
a new stand/range of paints we begin to feel uncomfortable. So this
week we received a new stand of Tamiya PS Polycarbonate paint, Whoo
Hoo!
These
spray paints were especially developed for decorating transparent
polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modeling. Each can contains 100ml
of paint, which is the appropriate amount for finishing the model. Paint
the body from the inside, keeping the can about 30cm from the surface.
After curing, apply another coat. Small details should be brush painted
beforehand, using Tamiya bottle paints for polycarbonate. These paints
are impervious to oil and fuels, so they can be safely used on
gas-powered R/C bodies.
PLEASE NOTE PS PAINTS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR PLASTIC KITS.
Just
in time for Christmas we have received the ideal stocking filler for
any Disney 'Cars' Fan, CARS Snap Fit Model kits (only €6.50) There is no
glue or paint requred, just click and play!
The
ideal gift for the person who is impossible to buy for but always knows
what they want! With an ID Models gift voucher you have no time limit
on when you have to use it (a simple extension request will add another
12 months) it can be used on the website, in the warehouse or over the
phone. Vouchers start at only €10.00.
Motormax
is our best value range of 1/18 and 1/24 diecast models. They start at
€14.95 and go up to €34.95. The American Classics are the most popular;
each model has opening doors and bonnet, lots of chrome parts and a
display base. If American classics are not your thing Motormax also do
beautiful modern classics like the BMW M3 and Lamborghini Aventador.
For
as long as I can remember a plastic model kit such as Airfix has been a
hugely popular gift at Christmas. Even in this day and age of computers
and technology there is still a place for the traditional style toys. Complete kits
(including glue and paint) start at only €8.95. So if you are looking
to keep anybody away form the TV or computer for a few hours over the
holidays, a model kit is the perfect gift.
Geoworld
are an educational range of paleontology and archaeology based toys
that will amaze any young ‘wanna be’ Indiana Jones. The dig &
discover range is the most popular, discover the treasures within the
pyrite block, then learn about your discovery with the booklet provided.
There
is a big range of products to choose form, weather your interest is
Dinosaur bones or real fossils and gem stones, there always something to
capture the imagination.
The world’s smallest building blocks! With such tiny blocks you can build very detailed models, everything from the Taj Mahal to a cute little frog. Either build and display the model or leave it up to your imagination and build anything you want, there are lots of ideas on Youtube of things to build.
By
far the best new product for ID Models in 2014, the detail and accuracy
in each model has to be seen to be believed. Whether you want to build a
windmill or a star wars AT-AT
there are plenty of different items to choose from. I recommend
starting off with something simple (single sheet model like the Eifel tower) and build up to Capitol Hill or Sydney Opera House. There is no gluing or soldering, we recommend a tweezers to make it easier.
Once
finished Metal Earth models make really spectucalar display pieces. We
recommend 12+ but anybody can build them with a bit of help.
New
to us this year is the Tamiya RC Range, a cut above what we have done
before but still great for anybody who is getting in RC or RC racing.
Buy the Combo deals to ensure that you have everything you need to start racing. Have a look at our previous Blog post on ‘What’s in the box’ to get a better idea of what is involved in building an RC Kit.
CMC
are the ultimate collectable display model, each model is had built and
can contain up to 1500 individual pieces. They make the perfect gift
for the person who is impossible to buy for but would appreciate the
detail and engineering that goes into building one of these beautiful
collectors’ items.
Tronico
are a range of construction, farm and aviation metal kits that bold
together (very like meccano) to create either beautiful display models
or in the casr of the RC kits something to play with! Each model comes
with all the tools needed and with new improved colour coded
instructions building one of these is challaging but a great pleasure.
We
all have a favourite TV show or movie that we have watched a hundred
times but still look forward to seeing it again, with our range of TV
& Movie models you can now have a permanent reminder of that show or
Movie. Browse or TV & Film section to see if there is anything that
would suit, the A-Team and Ghostbusters are still the most popular.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX - TAMIYA MIDNIGHT PUMPKIN RC KIT
After
years of dabbling in the lower end RC (mainly kid’s models) we
have decided to make a return to Tamiya Rc Kits and Pre-built RC
Models. This is very nostalgic for me as I remember as a 16 year old
kid selling these in The Model Motor shop in stillorgan shopping centre,
that was over 20 years ago!
We received our first shipment of RC Kits and Pre-Built this week,
all are up on the website. Tamiya RC is one of the most reliable and
robust RC models on the market but in the event of a breakage, all
spares are available to keep you up an running.
To give
you an idea of what is involved in building a Kit I thought I'd do a
'What's In The Box" with the very lovely Midnight Pumpkin.
It
may look a little complicated but tamiya produce some of the best
assembly instructions on the market. Most kits require paint but this
kit is pre-finished in a lovely black/chrome, all you need to do is
apply the decals.
To match the stunning looking body you have a super strong chassis, built to last.
After
you are finished oodling the chrome body your attention will be drawn
to the massive, soft monster tyres, these guarantee great off-road fun
There
are lots of nuts/bolts/screws but the instructions ensure that A. they
will all be out in the correct place and B. you will not be left with a
pile of let over pieces wondering where the hell I went wrong!
Finally, If you want everything you need (except the 8aa batteries for the transmitter) I highly recommend buying from the Combo Deals section, they include everything you need to start racing.

Guillow’s Balsa Planes.
We are delighted to announce that we are now stocking the Guillow’s Balsa planes range. We have 10 different types in stock with more to come.
Guillow’s
balsa planes are laser cut balsa kits which when complete make a great
looking model plane that can fly. You can either use the rubber band
(included) or upgrade the mode to a motor for flying.
There are several different series depending on how hard and what kind of plane you want.
SERIES 200 - 80
years ago, these WWI fighters were engaged in thrilling dogfights over
the Western front. Today they have a heroic niche in aviation history
that has not or ever will diminish with time. Magnificent war birds of
the 1914 - 1918 era. Fighters made famous by World War 1 aces like
Bishop, Richthofen and Guynemer. The last word in scale realism for the
super detail fan and a flying aircraft for those who build and fly. Fly
with included rubber power motor or convert to electric or gas engine.
These balsa airplane kits contain Laser cut balsa parts, scale WWI
plastic wheels, full set of decals and vacuum formed plastic parts.
SERIES
300 - These popular private planes are still in use today by many
private pilots. Whether built for scale or contest flying, the balsa
wood airplanes in this series represent the finest in design and flight
capability. Each can be flown using either the rubber motor included in
the kit or converted to gas engine or electric motor (instructions for
using electric power supplied in kits).
SERIES
400 - World War II models for rubber power, U-Control and free flight.
The ultimate in scale design and construction. From the extra special
instruction sheets and plans to the well laser cut balsa parts sheets,
these balsa wood airplane kits truly represent the last word for those
seeking the unusual in value, quality and completeness. For ages 12 and
up.
SERIES
500 - Our most popular kit series (16½" wing span). These easy building
balsa airplane kits contain die-cut balsa parts, plastic cowls and
canopies, decals, plastic prop, wheels, tissue and a 24-page model
building booklet. For ages 10 and up. Approx 1/30 scale.
SERIES
600 - Build by number models - ideal for individual use or for group
model building such as in a school class. Each balsa airplane kit
contains the right combination of building material and "power package"
to assemble an attractive model with good flying ability. For ages 10
and up.
SERIES 700 - he Arrow and Fairchild are
easy to assemble "Build-by-Number" model kits. These planes build light
and are great flyers!
SERIES
800 - Beautiful large scale balsa models, from the famous Stearman
PT-17 trainer to the history making Spirit of St. Louis. Our latest
release, the DC-3, can also be built as a C-47 and decals &
instructions to build either model are included. Each model is a small
but faithful replica of an airplane widely known for deeds in wartime
or, like the Cessna Skyhawk, for its present day popularity. Here is
model building worthy of the time and effort, you would be hard pressed
to find a finer kit available. Scale models as only Guillow makes them,
kits contain the best quality materials and instructions that have made
Guillow kits the "Best in Balsa".
SERIES 900 - Sleek
rubber powered models of WWII fighters for indoor or outdoor flying.
Built light, they are great flyers with ample wing areas and effective
rubber motor/propeller combinations. Kits contain top quality balsa,
plastic nose cowls, canopies and decals.
To complete the model you will need.
Balsa Glue – We stock Humbrol balsa Glue, you will also need standard glue.
White Glue
– For bonding tissue (coming soon into stock) any PVa glue will do.
This can also be watered down and used instead of Dope to seal the
plane.
Dope – This will seal the paper and make it ready for painting. Check out this video for full instructions on how to use it.
Sharp Cutting blade –
The balsa parts are laser cut but are held onto the stencils by small
tabs which need to be cut. We stock a large range of blades suitable for
the job.
Sandpaper – Any fine sand paper will do.
Paints – We have all the paints you will need, click HERE to see our full range.
This
is one part of making these balsa planes that may be a little tricky, I
have copied the guide from guillow’s to give you a helping hand.
How do I tissue cover a model? To
cover with tissue provided in kit ... I use a 50/50 % mixture of White
Glue and water to adhere the tissue onto the framework !!!!
Sand framework VERY WELL !!!
Mix your "glue mixture" - 50% water and 50% White glue
Cut a piece of tissue a bit oversized for the piece you are covering (lets say the rudder in this case)
Paint some glue mixture down around the perimeter of the rudder structure
Lay your tissue down and smooth it out as much as you can by pulling a bit and smoothing with your fingers
Paint ANOTHER coat of glue mixture THRU the tissue (around the perimeter) to assure a good bond
Let glue dry and then trim off excess tissue with sharp razor blade.
repeat for other side of rudder . . . overlapping tissue slightly !
When the part is all done, dry and trimmed, you can mount it on your plane. There is a great FAQ section on Guillow's website where all you building questions will be answered click HERE.
After my last trip to the Nuremberg Toy Fair in January I came back with one product that I really wanted to get my hands on, Bel Model Kits. These guys had a tiny stand with only a few models but it was jammed all the time!
The
quality and detail is some of the best I have seen, with super quality
decals and photetched parts the finish you get is hard to beat.
At
the Nuremberg Toy Fair earlier this year we spotted a little stand in
on of the massive halls, Metal Earth, what they were displaying blew us
away.
These small 3D models of everything form a spider to
The white House have to be seen to be believed. These amazingly
detailed 3D Models start as 4” square steel sheets and finish as amazing
3D Models. Use the easy to follow instructions to pop out the pieces,
bend the tabs, and connect them at the attachment points, simple!
Once
finished we recommend displaying them on the Metal Earth stands with
LED lights, you will not be able to stop looking at them!
There are different size/skill level models. The more expensive ones have 2/3 sheets per model.
Have
a look at the videos below to see how easy it is to assemble great
these little 3D models and how good they look when finished
We dont do the solar spinning stand but the LED stand makes the model look great on display, espcially in low light.
We have had the chance to build some of the new Metal Earth 3D Model Kits, they really look fantastic, going to have to build some of the more complicated ones later this week!
MMS003 P51 Mustang
MMS016 Eiffel tower.
To give you a better idea of how they look before assembly, here is a photo of a 2 sheet model.
